Cadets Face Groping Charges

WEST POINT, New York -- Moving swiftly to avoid comparisons to the Tailhook scandal, the United States' Military Academy is investigating five football players who allegedly groped 15 female cadets during a pep rally.

Eighteen women in all told investigators they were brushed across the breasts as they and other cadets ran past a cordon of West Point players during the Oct. 20 "spirit run," held two days before the football team played The Citadel.

Three of those women said they believed the touching was accidental.

Punishment could include a three-month suspension from the team.

West Point commanders said the inquiry bears no comparison to the Navy's Tailhook scandal, in which dozens of women were molested by drunken naval aviators who formed a gauntlet in a hotel hallway during a 1991 convention in Las Vegas.

The women have not been able to identify the offending players.
