Businessman for Latvia

RIGA, Latvia () -- A successful but politically unknown businessman was nominated as the future prime minister of the Baltic state of Latvia on Thursday in the hope that he would end over two months of political deadlock.

Latvian President Guntis Ulmanis named Andris Shkele as prime minister-designate during an official trip to Germany, as political support for the nomination grew back home.

Shkele, 37, was deputy agriculture minister when Latvia gained independence in 1991. He is currently chairman of the state-owned Latvian Shipping Co.

Shkele emerged as a compromise candidate after two previous attempts to form a government failed.
