Blockade Causes Havoc

BAKU, Azerbaijan () -- A Russian-imposed blockade of railway lines to Azerbaijan has forced transport officials to dismiss 10,000 workers and left a logjam of thousands of freight cars unable to enter the country.

Russia imposed the ban on rail traffic in September because the lines crossed the breakaway region of Chechnya.

Teymur Mamedov, deputy chief of transport services, told the Turan news agency that nearly 5,000 rail cars were halted outside Azerbaijan, unable to deliver their cargo.
