ROME (X) -- Italy's government clashed head on with corruption-busting magistrates Wednesday after Milan's chief prosecutor hinted that Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi could become the target of a formal graft probe.
Prosecutor Francesco Saverio Borrelli said investigations into alleged irregularities at Telepiu, a pay television company in which Berlusconi's Fininvest business empire has a 10 percent stake, risked reaching "high levels in financial and political circles," widely taken as a reference to Berlusconi himself.
While Milan's magistrates have won public approval for their assault on corruption, Berlusconi and his allies have increasingly accused them of exceeding their powers.
Meanwhile, workers protesting against unemployment fought police outside Berlusconi's office in the first notable unrest since unions last week called a series of demonstrations leading up to a four-hour general strike on Oct. 14.
