Bayern Ties Spartak in Last Seconds

A last-second equalizer from defender Marcus Babbel saved Bayern Munich from defeat in a 1-1 draw with Spartak Moscow in their European Champions' League Group B clash Wednesday.

Babbel rose at a free kick to head the ball in at the right-hand post in the waning seconds of the 90th minute to give the German visitors a deserved point. Nikolai Pisarev had put the Russians ahead against the run of play in the 78th minute.

After more than an hour of scoreless back-and-forth play, Pisarev danced around two defenders on the right side of the penalty box and fired in a shot which took a deflection off Bayern captain Lothar Matth?us into the roof of the net.

A crowd of 25,000 turned out to watch home Spartak, which had lost their opening two games of group play, in sub-freezing temperatures at Luzhniki Stadium. (Reuters, MT)
