Bangkok Police Arrest Russian Prostitutes

The four women, ranging from 19 to 22 years old, were arrested in an apartment building late Wednesday night, said Captain Thongchai Kwahuaykwang.

The women charged customers 6,000 baht ($235) for each encounter, very expensive compared to Thai prostitutes, he said.

Last week, the Thai newspaper The Nation quoted Immigration Commissioner Police Lieutenant General Jaruk Mekwichai as saying authorities first noticed Russian women working as prostitutes in Thailand about a year ago.

The paper quoted an unidentified Interior Ministry official as saying most were students who came to Thailand during their vacations to earn extra money. Thai procurers arrange for them to stay in hotels, the official said.

Bangkok has a huge sex industry. Many magazines directed at tourists are filled with advertisements offering both Thai and foreign prostitutes.
