Art Curators Appeal

Lawyers for Yury Samodurov and Andrei Yerofeyev, Moscow-based art curators who were convicted Monday of inciting religious hatred by organizing an exhibition, filed an appeal to the Moscow City Court on Tuesday, Interfax reported.

No date for the appeal hearing has been scheduled.

The lawyers said they have appealed even though they have yet to obtain the full text of the verdict passed by the Tagansky District Court on Monday. The court fined Samodurov 200,000 rubles ($6,497) and Yerofeyev 150,000 rubles for staging the “Forbidden Art” exhibition in 2007, which featured artwork depicting Jesus as Mickey Mouse and Lenin.

The radical art group Voina protested the trial by releasing 3,000 cockroaches into the courtroom Monday, but Samodurov criticized the stunt, the RAPSI news agency reported Tuesday.
