Aristide Says He'll Quit as Promised

PORT-AU-PRINCE -- Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide has confirmed that he will step down as promised Feb. 7, 1996, putting an end to concerns that he might bow to the demands of his supporters and attempt to continue in office.

Presidential elections in Haiti are scheduled for Dec. 17 and Aristide, who was returned to power last year in a U.S. military intervention, is constitutionally barred from seeking re-election.

However, in comments a week ago, Aristide said he "would not turn his back" on supporters who want him to remain in office to make up for the three years he spent in exile, sparking speculation that he would attempt to hold onto his position.

In an interview Thursday, Aristide put an end to such speculation, saying the misunderstanding had arisen because his controversial comments had been only partially quoted.

Aristide also confirmed that he will not accept a position in the new administration.

"I can serve without an official post," he said.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
