Arafat Campaign Starts

NABLUS, West Bank () -- Palestine Liberation Organization head Yasser Arafat kicked off his campaign to be elected as Palestinian "president" Friday in an address to thousands of Palestinians at the newest self-rule enclave of Nablus in the West Bank.

"From liberated Nablus -- would you allow me to run?" asked Arafat in an address from the former Israeli army headquarters' roof. Residents waving flags and posters roared approval.

Arafat is running to head a council ruling autonomous Palestinian areas in the West Bank and Gaza in Jan. 20 polls. Palestinians will also elect 82 ordinary members of the council, which will act as the legislative body of Palestinian autonomy.
