UNITED NATIONS -- The UN chief announced Tuesday that he was replacing his top official for former Yugoslavia.
Yasushi Akashi will be replaced by the undersecretary-general for peacekeeping, Kofi Annan, as of Nov. 1.
Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali said in a letter to the Security Council that he made the decision "taking into account the critical period ahead for United Nations operations in the area."
