AIDS Permeates Asia

YOKOHAMA, Japan () -- As the AIDS virus continues its inexorable march, expanding into remote areas such as Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan, there is a feeling among the AIDS medical and activist communities that the disease is here for a very long stay.

Shadowed by that belief, the 10th International Conference on AIDS will open here Sunday with the expectations of its participants considerably lower than in previous conferences, and with attendance feared to be lower than any recent meeting.

"Many of us in the mid-1980s expected dramatic breakthroughs," said New York City AIDS activist Spencer Cox, who is HIV-positive. "Do I now think a cure for AIDS is going to come in my lifetime? I say no. I think I will die of AIDS."
