AIDS Estimate Raised

GENEVA () -- In a sharp upward revision of its figures, the World Health Organization on Friday issued new estimates of 17 million adults and about 1.5 million children infected with the virus that causes AIDS.


Some 6 million people are thought to have developed the full-blown disease since the start of the epidemic in the late 1970s, the UN health agency said. Of these, about 4.5 million have died.


WHO previously estimated that 13 million to 15 million adults and 1 million children were infected with the human immunodeficiency virus.
