GENEVA () -- Abkhaz militiamen have conducted a five-day sweep of murder, torture and disappearances against ethnic Georgians in the breakaway region, the United Nations refugee agency said Tuesday.
"We are absolutely appalled at these horrible abuses, and we are making our views known to the Abkhaz authorities,'' said Ron Redmond, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
UN doctors have treated 35 people with torture wounds and have seen bodies of 10 other victims, Redmond said. The sweep apparently ended last Wednesday, when the 400 to 600 militiamen pulled out, Redmond said
