54 Hutus Massacred

NAIROBI () -- Gunmen in uniform slaughtered 54 Rwandan refugees in northern Burundi near the border with Rwanda, indiscriminately shooting down men, women and children, aid workers said on Tuesday.

Others wounded in the massacre told aid workers they believed the attackers were members of the Tutsi-dominated Rwanda Patriotic Front, which seized power in Rwanda in July after three months of civil war.

Nearly all the Gittwa refugees are members of Rwanda's Hutu majority who fled across the border in July.

There is general confusion in the area, with unconfirmed reports of clashes between moderate and extremist Hutus, and cross-border swoops by Rwandan Tutsi soldiers into Burundi.
