48 Tajiks Captured

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- Opposition fighters seized 48 Tajik soldiers in the mountains of this Central Asian nation, a news agency reported.

The rebels attacked a Tajik Defense Ministry outpost and took the troops hostage Saturday near the village of Tavil-Dar, some 280 kilometers east of the capital Dushanbe, Interfax reported Monday. It was unclear where the rebels took the soldiers.

Government troops clashed with opposition units for months in Tavil-Dar last fall, Interfax added. In a separate firefight in the area Saturday, two Tajik police officers and several rebels were reported killed during an opposition attack on a police checkpoint.
