26 Cubans Detained

KEY WEST, Florida () -- Twenty-six Cubans trying to reach the United States on a stolen Cuban government boat were detained Wednesday while the U.S. coastguard awaited orders on how to deal with them.

A Cuban diplomat demanded they be returned to Cuba, saying a Cuban navy lieutenant was killed and four other sailors forced overboard Monday when the boat was commandeered, a charge the hijackers deny.

Last week, Havana erupted in riots after ferries were commandeered and the Cuban leader Fidel Castro threatened a wave of refugees to the United States if it did not change its immigration policy which favors Cubans.
