15 Die in Mine Blast

MOSCOW () -- A planned explosion Monday at a coal mine in Siberia caused a cage that was taking workers down from the pit's surface to collapse, killing 15 miners, Interfax reported.

The explosion at the Pervomaiskaya mine in Kemerovo, about 3,000 kilometers east of Moscow, occurred early Monday, the news agency reported.

Rescuers managed to save 66 of the 81 miners who were in the shaft at the time of the accident. An early inquiry said the explosion, intended to open up new coal faces, broke the cage that takes workers below the surface, Interfax said.
