COLOMBO, Sri Lanka () -- Sri Lankan troops advancing on the northern Tamil Tiger guerrilla stronghold of Jaffna killed at least 132 rebels and lost 41 of their own men in two fierce battles, the military said Monday.

Government troops killed at least 92 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or LTTE, rebels and wounded more than 350 when they captured the Urelu road junction on the approach to Jaffna after intense fighting Sunday afternoon, it said.

The rebels lost at least 40 fighters, including three leaders, in a battle the same morning in Neerveli, where the LTTE has an underground bunker and hospital complex, east of Urelu, the military said in a statement.
