Inflation 17% a Month

The Moscow Times
MOSCOW (MT) -- Food prices in city markets across Russia rose 5. 4 percent over the last week of September, giving an inflation rate for the whole month of 17 percent, according to the Economic Ministry's forecasting center.

In its weekly report in Izvestia, the center said that the retail price rise was the first reaction to new laws that allowed for a rise in wholesale prices on oil and grain. The center says gasoline prices at pumps had risen on average 1. 7 times by Sept. 29. The average price at the pumps was 13. 4 liters. The center's price index of a basket of 70-foodstuffs has now grown 844 percent since the start of the year. The percentage increase for the month of September was the biggest since January when prices were first liberalized.
