Bankruptcy Forces TWA To Halt Moscow Flights

Trans World Airlines will close its Moscow office and stop its three weekly flights to Moscow as part of a restructuring forced on the company by a bankruptcy suit in the United States.

TWA will fly its last run to Brussels next Wednesday and its eight local staff will cease work at the end of the month. Three other European offices have been closed down -- Stockholm, Copenhagen and Istanbul.

Station manager Carol Serrenti said the company saw great potential in the Moscow run and regretted having to close it down. But Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the United States had forced it to cut back. "It's not a time to be setting up new stations", she said.

She said TWA does not hold a large share of the U. S. -Russia travel market. The airline would return to the Russian market, which it entered in March, if it could financially restructure.

Delta and Aeroflot are the only two airlines with direct flights to the United States. Like TWA, many other airlines offer flights with a stop in Europe. TWA will rebook anyone with flights after Oct. 21 on Delta.
