An exhibition opening at the Moscow House of Photography on Saturday compares the work of controversial American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe with Mannerist prints from the 16th century. Mapplethorpe's photographs of nudes provoked an obscenity trial in 1990, but this exhibit will display them side-by-side with classical prints from the State Hermitage that feature a similarly anatomical treatment of the body. Below, the 1985 photograph "Ken, Lydia and Tyler" is juxtaposed with "The Graces," an engraving by Jacob Matham after Hendrick Goltzius.
