Days after a riot erupted at a prison in the Russian republic of Bashkortostan, the facility's inmates have rebelled again, protesting the investigation into the first incident that had led to the hospitalization of six prisoners, the regional branch of the Federal Penitentiary Service said in a statement Wednesday.
More than 100 inmates held at a maximum-security prison in the city of Salavat in Bashkortostan, also known as Bashkiria, broke windows and wreaked havoc, some of them climbing onto the roof on the security guards' dormitory as investigators were probing the circumstances surrounding the riot that took place Sunday, the statement said.
Prison staff did not resort to force against the rebelling inmates, according to the statement. No injuries have been reported in the most recent unrest.
The riot was apparently sparked by prisoners' demand that the inmates suspected of organizing Sunday's riot not be removed from the facility.
This latest incident marks the third major prison riot in the country this month. A brawl at a detention center in the Nizhny Novgorod region last week left one dead and more than 20 injured.
