A local lawmaker in the Kaliningrad region struck and killed a teenager while driving along a regional highway, investigators said Thursday.
The incident took place late Wednesday 25 kilometers from the village of Bayevka on the Kaliningrad-Polessk highway, investigators said in a statement, adding that the teenager died at the scene.
The statement identified Alexander Vasilyev, a district council deputy in Kaliningrad's Polessk district, as the guilty driver and said that he was behind the wheel of an exclusive Mercedes S-220. It was not immediately clear whether Vasilyev was exceeding the speed limit at the time of the crash.
"According to preliminary data, the 17-year-old [victim] got off a bus and, as he attempted to cross the highway, was hit by the deputy's car," the statement said Thursday, without disclosing the identity.
Investigators are now considering opening a criminal case on charges of causing a fatality while breaking road traffic rules. The charges carry a sentence of up to five years in prison.
Earlier this month, Kaliningrad region traffic police started using an angel look-alike on local roads as part of an anti-speeding campaign set to run through mid-December.
