A judge on the supreme court of the volatile Dagestan republic was killed in the regional capital Makhachkala on Tuesday evening, investigators said Wednesday.
Around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, five shots were fired at Magomed Magomedov by an unidentified gunman on Ulitsa Maxima Gorkogo, the Investigative Committee said in a statement.
Among several possible motives for the crime, investigators believe the most likely to be related to Magomedov's profession.
Magomedov, who assumed his post in 2005, presided over hearings connected to terrorist activity in the republic, where separatist rebels frequently clash with government forces. Local media reported Wednesday that he had received death threats in the past.
