$160M Marina for Mega Yachts

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands -- Puerto Rico banks have loaned developers $107 million to build a mega yacht marina in the U.S. Virgin Islands, officials said late last week.

Popular, Westernbank and First Bank of Puerto Rico loaned the money for construction of the Yacht Haven marina, which will also include five restaurants, dozens of retail shops and 12 luxury condominiums, said Christine O'Keefe, a spokeswoman for Yacht Haven.

The total cost of the project is estimated at about $160 million, but O'Keefe said she was not sure where the rest of the funding would come from.

"The mega yacht market is booming -- absolutely booming. And there aren't too many places those people can park a 90-meter yacht," O'Keefe said.

The site in the U.S. Virgin Islands' St. Thomas Harbor will be the largest mega yacht facility in the Caribbean when completed in November 2005, she said.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
