Lomonosov Moscow State University

Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) has ranked 196th in the World University Ratings 2014/15, published Thursday by the Times Higher Education magazine.

This is the first time that Russia's most acclaimed college has made Times' top 200 since the first installment of the list, which debuted in the 2010/2011 academic year.

The only other Russian college to make the cut was Novosibirsk State University, which ranked in the 301-350 bracket of the ranking.

The year's Time's list was topped by the California Institute of Technology, which was joined by fellow U.S.-based colleges Harvard (in second place) and Stanford (fourth). Britain's Oxford and Cambridge universities finished in third and fifth place, respectively.

Moscow State University also ranked 61th on the Time's list of best universities for engineering and technology, which was topped by the U.S-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The Times Higher Education rating is one of the world's three leading university ratings, along with a list compiled annually by British-based education specialists QS Quacquarelli Symonds and the Academic Ranking of World Universities compiled in Shanghai.
