The Artists Against the Kremlin exhibitions, organized by The Moscow Times and the All Rights Reversed gallery at the De Balie art center in Amsterdam in 2024 and 2025, have been the largest exhibitions of contemporary Russian-speaking artists opposing totalitarianism and war.
In his lecture at the University of Cambridge, “100 Years of Protest Art in Russia: From Tsarism to Putinism,” the exhibitions’ curator, Vladimir Shalamov, examines specific works to show how artists from different generations have responded to state pressure in the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and Putin’s Russia.
