Workers at Russia's Vostochny Cosmodrome to Strike Over Unpaid Wages

Workers involved in the construction of the Vostochny Cosmodrome, located in the Amur region of Russia's Far East, plan to strike on July 8 over unpaid wages, the Interfax news agency reported Thursday.

The two working groups — UMC N 726 and SU-719 — are from Dalspetsstroy of Spetsstroy of Russia, the largest construction organization in the Far East.

Angered employees wrote in a letter to the editor of the local news that wages have been unpaid since April, with only minimum payments having been received, Interfax reported, citing the workers' letter. Afraid of layoffs, workers have remained anonymous in their public complaints.

According to Interfax, Dalspetsstroy has said that the matter is under the control of Russian and Dalspetsstroy management, as well as labor inspections. The company reported being in a difficult financial situation due to the irregular financing of the cosmodrome.

According to Dalspetsstroy, all workers have received their salaries for 2016, albeit with slight delays, Interfax reported. The company blamed incomplete payments on technical reasons, Interfax reported, citing company statements.

The company promises that payment will take place in the coming days.
