Afghanistan Is World's Biggest Hashish Producer

The war-torn nation of Afghanistan, already famous for producing more heroin than any other country, is now also the world's No. 1 producer of hashish, Russia's top anti-drug official said in comments carried by state media on Thursday.

"Rather large amounts of this hashish are entering Russia," Viktor Ivanov, head of the Federal Drug Control service, was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying.

Drugs from Afghanistan are smuggled through Central Asia into Russia, where they are sold to users or shipped to Europe or North America.

About a third of the heroin made in Afghanistan enters Russia, President Vladimir Putin's envoy to Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, said in February last year.
