Two Policemen Killed in Deadly Attack on Dagestan Highway

Two police officers were killed in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan.

Two police officers were killed and two more injured when unidentified attackers opened fire on their car in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan in the latest outbreak of violence in the turbulent Russian region.

One of the suspected attackers was also killed during the gunfight that ensued when policemen chased down their car, Interfax reported Wednesday, citing an unidentified law enforcement official in Dagestan. Two more attackers remain at large, the report said.

The clash began when a Lada Kalina, a Russian-made minicar, cut ahead of a police sedan on a highway late Tuesday night and the men inside opened fire at the officers, Interfax reported.

Dagestan, where authorities are battling a rise of militant Islamic extremism, has seen a series of deadly gunfights over the past year.
