Kirov Regional Government Bans Gmail for Students

Education authorities in the Kirov region have banned students from using Gmail accounts in an effort to comply with the Russian government's information security policy, Novaya Gazeta reported Wednesday.

In addition to forbidding the use of Gmail, Kirov authorities prohibited educational institutions from storing work-related information on foreign Internet resources.

The head of the local education department, Alexander Izmailov, told Novaya Gazeta that despite the ban, teachers would be allowed to access Google's e-mail service.
