Lomonosov Moscow State University has been ranked the best educational institution in Russia by Interfax and radio station Ekho Moskvy.

The main objective of the project, which is conducted annually by both information agencies, is to develop mechanisms and procedures to independently assess Russian universities and their educational programs, as well as to boost the competitive edge of Russia's educational system, according to Interfax.

St. Petersburg State University came in second place, followed by the MIFI National Research Nuclear University.

The ranking featured 161 universities: 74 of them ordinary universities, 29 натионал research institutes, 37 technical or technological universities, 12 economic institutions, 3 agricultural universities, and 6 other universities offering training in a specific field.

The activities of each university were assessed according to six basic parameters: educational activities; scientific and research activities; activities of the university in the social sphere; international activities of the university; brand; innovation; and entrepreneurial activities.

Lomonosov Moscow State University was also cited among the developing world's top 10 universities last December by the Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies ranking.
