Eighteen years ago today, on Jan. 28, 1996, the poet and essayist Joseph Brodsky died in New York at the age of 56. During the Brezhnev period of stagnation, Brodsky was expelled from the Soviet Union, and in 1987 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.
