50,000 Chickens Burn Alive in Kirov Farm Fire

About 50,000 chickens burned alive overnight when a fire ripped through a Kirov region poultry farm.

Regional emergency workers said in a statement that they rushed to the site of the blaze shortly after 11 p.m. but were unable to save the helpless birds. It took almost an hour to extinguish the flames in the village of Novy, the statement said.

Local police estimated that the farm could have lost as much as 5 million rubles ($166,000) in scorched chickens, Interfax reported.

The fire was likely caused by a short circuit, emergency officials said.
