Cop Gets 9 1/2 Years for Multiple Rapes

A 26-year-old provincial policeman has been sentenced to 9 1/2 years in prison for raping four young women and attempting to rape another two, investigators said Tuesday.

The policeman, Anatoly Krikunov, targeted the women during the morning hours in Bataisk, a city of 112,000 people just 15 kilometers southwest of Rostov-on-Don, the local branch of the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

Flashing a knife, he threatened to kill the women if they resisted, and then led them to a deserted place, including a cemetery, where he assaulted them, the statement said.

He raped four women, while two others managed to escape.

Krikunov also was convicted of stealing 116,000 rubles worth of unspecified items from six cars, the statement said, without specifying whether the cars belonged to the victims.
