New State Twitter Accounts

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev's administration has launched official government Twitter accounts, marking a significant expansion in its social media presence.

The account @pravitelstvo_RF started tweeting Thursday and had garnered nearly 9,000 followers by Sunday afternoon even though it had published only 32 messages on the popular microblogging site.

By contrast, the English-language account @governmentrf had only 720 followers.

Medvedev built an image of himself as a tech-savvy leader during his four years as president. He was ranked among the "most connected world leaders" in a report published last week, and his personal account, @MedvedevRussia, is the service's most popular Russian language account, with 1.3 million followers.
