Russia Joins UN Call on Syria

UNITED NATIONS — In a major blow for Syrian President Bashar Assad, Russia and China joined the Security Council on Wednesday in backing Kofi Annan's bid to end the fighting.

The statement voices the "gravest concern at the deteriorating situation" and signals diplomatic trouble ahead for Assad, who has counted on support from Russia to fend off international criticism over bloodshed in Syria.
