Aeroflot Buys Cheap Boeings

Aeroflot is to buy eight more Boeing 777 long-haul airliners (two 777-200ERs and six 777-300ERs) at a hefty discount, sources said.

The contract would be worth about $2.17 billion at catalog price, but Boeing offered a significant discount. Aeroflot bought eight 777s in March. The company said at the time that the price would not exceed $1.16 billion — a 47 percent markdown from catalog price. The bulk of financing will be provided by Eximbank, with Aeroflot directly funding just five percent of the deal.

Boeing's pliability is likely due to its hope to escape hefty fines for delays in its 787 Dreamliner project. Aeroflot has ordered 22 of the liners.
