Cruel Cops Freed

Five Irkutsk regional policemen convicted of torturing suspects received suspended sentences, the local branch of the Investigative Committee said on its web site Wednesday.

Four of the men were convicted of abuse of office, while the fifth was convicted of “inflicting bodily harm,” the report said, adding that they were handed three- and four-year suspended sentences. The police used “unauthorized interrogation methods” including beating suspects and forcing them to do strenuous physical activities while wearing gas masks, it said.
