Vershbow to Join NATO

BRUSSELS — NATO’s secretary-general said Wednesday that he would appoint Alexander Vershbow, the U.S. assistant secretary of defense for international security, as his next deputy.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Vershbow would replace Deputy Secretary-General Claudio Bisogniero of Italy when his term expires in 2012.

Vershbow previously served as a U.S. ambassador to NATO, Russia and South Korea.
