Gorbachev Criticizes Putin

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, once a backer of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, said in an interview published Wednesday that he now believes Putin is undermining democracy by crippling the opposition.

Gorbachev said Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev felt that Russia “needs authoritarianism,” and described United Russia as “a bad copy of the Soviet Communist Party,” The New York Times reported.
