Colonel in $1M Fraud Case

Army Colonel Valery Linnikov is under investigation on suspicion of defrauding the state of 40 million rubles ($1.3 million) after military families failed to receive apartments in Novosibirsk, Interfax reported Monday.

In 2008, Linnikov contracted a firm to construct an apartment building for families of military personnel in Novosibirsk, but the construction was never completed, the report said, citing the Prosecutor General’s Office. Linnikov, who is accused of using fake documents for the construction contract, faces up to 10 years in prison if charged and convicted of abuse of office.
