swimmer suspended

n LAUSANNE -- China's Bai Xiuyu, who set a world best for the women's 50 meters backstroke at the World Cup in Malmo, Sweden this year, has been suspended for a month for using the stimulant ephedrine. A spokesman for FINA, the international swimming federation, said on Wednesday Bai had been taking Chinese pills for a cold during the meeting on March 15-16. He said analysis of the pills showed an unacceptable level of ephedrine. FINA rejected an appeal by Germany's former world record holder Sylvia Gerasch against a decision to suspend her for two years for excessive levels of the stimulant caffeine.
