Mariners Get New Roof

SEATTLE () -- County officials have ratified a proposal to use taxpayer money to build a $320 million retractable-roof stadium for the Seattle Mariners, who had threatened to leave town without it.

The King County Council voted 10-3 on Monday to approve the funding package passed by the state legislature in a hastily called three-day special session this month.

The Mariners, who this year reached the playoffs for the first time in their 19-year history, have agreed to pay $45 million, while the state would contribute $105 million and the county would pay about $170 million for the stadium.
