Major's Party Challenge

LONDON () -- Prime Minister John Major threw down the gauntlet to Conservative party rebels at the state opening of parliament Wednesday, challenging them to back his government over its European policy or face an early election.

As right-wingers from the ruling party threatened to vote against the bill which would raise British payments to the European Union by ?259 million ($407.7 million) a year by 2000, government officials said Major would make it a vote of confidence in his government.

Defeat in such a vote would force an early poll, almost certainly leading to the Conservatives losing to Labour.
