LONDON -- Leeds was knocked out of the English League Cup after being held to a scoreless draw by struggling Division Three team Mansfield.
Holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg two weeks ago, Mansfield strung five men across its goal Tuesday night and often pulled two more back to supplement its defense in a defiant challenge to the Premier League visitors.
"We won a tactical battle and no one can take that away from us," Mansfield manager Andy King said. "Leeds didn't create a clear chance yet we had a couple." Mansfield, languishing in 15th place in Division Three, even managed to hold on after Colin Hoyle was sent off for a tackle on Gary Speed in the 77th minute. The Leeds lineup, worth an estimated $15 million on the transfer market, then tested goalkeeper Darren Ward on several occasions, but the 10-man underdogs, put together for around $300,000, hung on for the shutout.
Jubilant Mansfield fans swarmed on to the Field Mill pitch at the final whistle to celebrate the only upset of a top division team in 10 cup games Tuesday.
Crystal Palace was seconds away from suffering the same fate as Leeds. Trailing 1-0 from the away first leg against Division Three club Lincoln, Palace found the opposition defense impenetrable until Dean Gordon rose at the far post to head home John Salako's cross in second-half injury time.
Extra time goals from Chris Armstrong -- his first goal for nine games -- and Bruce Dyer clinched Palace's 3-0 victory and a place in the third round.
Struggling Tottenham, with its two Romanians on international duty and Teddy Sheringham nursing an injury, lost 3-2 at home to Watford after winning the first leg 6-3 over the Division One team.
German striker J--rgen Klinsmann scored his 11th goal for Spurs, while Lee Nogan netted twice for Watford.
In other games involving Premier League clubs, Chris Sutton scored his 10th goal of the season to give Blackburn a 1-1 away draw and 3-1 aggregate victory over Birmingham of Division Two.
Chelsea defeated Division One Bournemouth 1-0, Sheffield Wednesday drew Division Two Bradford 1-1, and Nottingham Forest drew Division Three Hereford 0-0. All advanced on aggregate. Norwich lost 1-0 at Swansea of Division Two, but the result was not enough to overturn a 3-0 first-leg score.
