Interim CIA Chief

WASHINGTON () -- President Bill Clinton on Thursday named Admiral William Studeman to temporarily head the Central Intelligence Agency until a replacement is found for James Woolsey, who resigned last week.

A White House announcement said Studeman, currently deputy director of the U.S. spy agency, would take over as acting CIA chief Jan. 10.

Woolsey, an expert on nuclear weapons strategy who served as President Jimmy Carter's undersecretary of the Navy from 1977 to 1979, abruptly resigned last Wednesday after nearly two years as CIA director.
