General to Reserves

MOSCOW () -- President Boris Yeltsin has transferred one of his highest ranking army officials to the reserves, Interfax reported Friday.

Colonel General Eduard Vorobyov, first deputy commander of Russia's land forces, was one of the first of several high-ranking officers to criticize the war in Chechnya. When asked in January to lead his troops into Grozny, Vorobyov submitted his resignation, but it was rejected.

Interfax reported that Vorobyov was undergoing medical examinations in a military hospital. The president's office and the Defense Ministry were not available for comment Friday.
