Canada says it is bringing its laws into line with international treaties by allowing farmers to grow hemp, outlawed for 40 years as the plant that produces marijuana and hashish.
The seeds sold will produce very low levels of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, and the mature plants will be used for products such as rope, textiles and biomass fuel, the government said Monday.
"The levels of THC will be so minimal that it doesn't matter if you take 20 leaves of the hemp, you won't get high on it," Health Minister Diane Marleau's press secretary said.
