Ethiopian's Triumph

HENGELO, Netherlands -- Haile Gebresilasie, who won the world 10,000 meters title last year after a dramatic clash with Kenya's Moses Tanui, has shattered the world 5,000-meter record by more than a second. The Ethiopian policeman, 21, clocked 12 minutes 56.96 seconds on a wet and windy Saturday evening to break Moroccan Said Aouita's seven-year-old world mark of 12:58.39. Gebresilasie finished with a blistering 58-second final lap. "I like rain," he said. "I did not expect to break the record until the last lap. I expected to run 12:55, but I settled for 12:56."
